The Terrain: What Makes CB Different
Crested Butte isn't the biggest mountain in Colorado — Vail and Park City have more acreage. What CB has is character. The North Face is one of the most iconic extreme-terrain zones in American skiing: sustained steep runs, chutes, cliffs, and moguls that draw expert skiers from around the world. It opens only when conditions allow and closes when they don't. When it's open, it's extraordinary.
But CB is more than the North Face. The Teocalli Bowl offers spectacular high-alpine skiing. The Paradise Lift accesses intermediate terrain with long sweeping runs. And the beginner area at the base is genuinely gentle — a good place to actually learn without feeling like you're in the way.
The Champagne Powder stereotype belongs to Utah, but CB gets cold, dry Rocky Mountain snow that skis light and fast. The base elevation (~9,300 ft) means everything stays cold.
Ski Season Dates & Best Timing
- Opening day:Typically late November — Thanksgiving week target
- Best powder:January–February — coldest months, driest snow, least tracked-out
- Busiest weeks:Christmas/New Year, MLK weekend, Presidents' Day — book months ahead
- Best value:Late January and early March — good snow, fewer crowds, lower rates
- Closing day:Typically early April — spring skiing is sunny, slushy, and festive
Lift Tickets & Passes
Crested Butte is an Ikon Pass resort. If you ski multiple mountains a season, the Ikon Pass pays for itself quickly — CB is included. Multi-day tickets purchased in advance on the resort website are significantly cheaper than day-of window prices. Never buy at the window if you can help it.
Ikon Pass
Best value for frequent skiers. Includes multiple days at CB plus access to 50+ resorts. Buy before the season starts for lowest price.
Multi-Day Tickets
3–5 day packages from the CB website offer the best non-pass value. Book online, pick up at the resort.
Day Tickets
Available at the window, but always more expensive. If you need a single day, buy online at least a day ahead for a modest discount.
