Crested Butte itinerary scene

Weekend itinerary

Elk Avenue, Snodgrass, and the ski base

Crested Butte’s historic town makes an easy Friday arrival; hike Snodgrass on Saturday while access remains open, with resort lifts ready if weather changes the day.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Snodgrass, Gothic Road, Elk Avenue, and Mount Crested Butte each need their own access and transport check.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights leave Friday for Elk Avenue, Saturday for Snodgrass or the resort fallback, and Sunday for coffee before CO 135.

Stay

The Grand Lodge at Crested Butte

A Mount Crested Butte hotel near the resort base for lift mornings and midday breaks; confirm the exact lift…

Main activity

Snodgrass out-and-back from Gothic Road

Use Snodgrass only while CBMBA and private-land status permit access; switch to the resort lifts for mud, fire, weather, or closure.

Pace

One trail morning

Turn around on Snodgrass for time, weather, flowers, and group ability; do not convert this weekend into a 401 transport plan.

Summer road-and-shuttle weekend

Historic town Friday, Snodgrass Saturday, ski base fallback

Stay near Elk Avenue Friday. Saturday's primary route is a Snodgrass out-and-back from Gothic Road only while CBMBA reports it open and the private-land season allows access. If mud, fire restrictions, weather, or closure blocks the trail, use Mountain Express to the resort's current lift-served summer operation.

This is not a 401 loop itinerary: CBMBA describes 401 as a point-to-point trail that needs its own transport and skill plan. Winter visitors should use the ski guide and dated CBMR calendar instead.

Friday

Friday evening on Elk Avenue

Check into historic town, walk Elk Avenue, and use Pitas in Paradise for the first meal.

Saturday

Saturday: Snodgrass from Gothic Road

Use a time-bounded out-and-back only while CBMBA marks the trail open and the private-land closure has not begun.

2:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to town by Mountain Express

Use the shuttle between Mount Crested Butte and historic town rather than moving the car for Elk Avenue.

Sunday

Sunday: coffee, Elk Avenue, then CO 135

Use the last morning for coffee and the historic district before checking county and highway alerts.
