Skiing & Snowboarding

Crested Butte Mountain Resort is famous for its extreme terrain — double-black runs like the North Face are legendary. But it's not just for experts; the mountain has excellent intermediate and beginner terrain, and the lack of crowds means you'll actually enjoy it. Season typically runs late November through early April. See our full Ski Guide →

Mountain Biking

Crested Butte is widely credited as one of the birthplaces of mountain biking. The 401 Trail is a rite of passage — a spectacular high-alpine singletrack loop with wildflower meadows and valley views. The Evolution Bike Park at the resort handles lift-accessed downhill, and dozens of trails radiate out from town for all skill levels. Prime season: June through September.

Wildflower Hiking

July is when Crested Butte earns its title as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. The Snodgrass Trail, Judd Falls, and Copper Creek are accessible favorites. For serious blooms, drive the Kebler Pass Road — lined with aspen groves and open meadows that explode with color. Full wildflower guide →

Fly Fishing

The East River and Slate River are beloved Gold Medal fly fishing waters. The Gunnison River to the south is world-class for brown and rainbow trout. Wading through a mountain valley with a fly rod is one of CB's great slow pleasures. Local outfitters offer half-day and full-day guided trips.

🏔️

Nordic Skiing & Snowshoeing

The Crested Butte Nordic Center operates over 50km of groomed trails through meadows and aspen groves near town — one of the best Nordic systems in Colorado. Snowshoeing is free and accessible everywhere; the road to Judd Falls makes a beautiful winter trek. Gear rentals are easy to find in town.

🏘️

Elk Avenue & Downtown CB

Crested Butte's colorfully-painted Victorian main street is the antithesis of corporate ski town gloss. Browse independent shops, grab a coffee, or settle in for a long dinner. The town's free bus service (the Mountain Express) connects downtown to the ski area base every 15 minutes in winter — no car needed once you're here.

🎉

Festivals & Events

CB punches well above its weight for events. The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival (July) brings workshops and guided hikes. Fat Bike World Championships (February) is a hoot to watch. The Crested Butte Film Festival (October) and Vinotok harvest festival in September round out the year. Something's always happening.
